Camp Season’s Round
The Corner
Summer’s fast approaching
and most families are already wondering what to do with
their kids in the sultry, lazy months ahead. Holiday boredom
is a common experience, and the sheen of sleeping in,
endless television, gaming consoles or Internet games like
free bingo soon wears off.
Summer camps are a popular option as they allow kids to
interact with their peers in a series of fun activities.
However, summer camps may not be viable for everybody due to
the cost involved, as well as the apprehensions involved in
sending kids with a group of strangers. One way to let your
kid have all the fun of a summer camp without compromises on
safety and budgets is to organize your own camp week.
Firstly, you must decide whether you want a day camp, travel
camp or a sleep away camp. Talk to neighbors, or parents of
your child’s friends, to fix a choice. Once that is done,
fix a venue and arrange well in advance for shelter,
bedding, essential medicines and extra food. Find out about
any special food or medication needs your young campers may
have and stock up accordingly.
The next part is to plan out a theme and daily activities
for the camp’s duration. Keep slots free for rest and games.
Use the camp to engage in learning. For example, bonfire
nights can be used to explain fire safety, baking classes
for fractions, stargazing sessions for basic astronomy,
treks for biology etc.
Of course, camp rules are not ironclad, so feel free to
deviate if the campers wish to. You may end up having more
fun than originally planned. |
